Kentucky PGA Junior Tour Championship Renamed in Lou Perry's Honor

LOUISVILLE, KY (August 14, 2020) – The Kentucky PGA Junior Tour’s season-ending tournament has a new name. The Tour Championship will henceforth be known as the Lou Perry Tour Championship, scheduled to take place October 17-18 at the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington.

Lou Perry passed away on November 3, 2011 at the age of 67, but before his passing he donated a generous sum of money to the Kentucky Golf Foundation. Perry, who had a strong passion in golf and introducing the game to children, made the donation to ensure Kentucky’s disadvantaged youth would have the opportunity to enjoy golf and learn the many lessons golf can teach.

Perry grew up in Morgantown, West Virginia with his family who had recently immigrated from Italy with little money. Along with his older brother, the two boys began to caddie at a local golf course to bring extra money in for the family. As Perry continued to caddie, his love for the game blossomed which turned into a burning passion. Despite being left-handed, Perry became so interested in golf that he learned how to swing a golf club right-handed since those were the only golf clubs he could afford.

“Golf was such a joy to Lou,” said Mary Shields Perry, Lou’s wife. “It taught him so much about life and helped contribute to his future success. He believed golf would help young people learn how to interact with others and learn good patterns of behavior. He left the money the way he did so he could benefit the youth and get them on the golf course to teach them the game, humor and respect.”

“The Kentucky PGA Junior Tour is excited to recognize Mr. Perry and his generous contributions to youth golf by naming one of our premier events, the Tour Championship, in his honor,” Jeff Adkerson, PGA Executive Director of Golf House Kentucky said. “The game of golf was a life-long passion of Mr. Perry and enhancing this Championship contributes to establishing golf as a life-long passion for our tournament participants. The Kentucky Golf Foundation and Kentucky PGA Junior Tour are grateful for Mr. Perry’s generous support of youth golf.”

The Kentucky PGA Junior Tour hopes to welcome Mary Shields Perry and other family and friends of Lou’s in attendance for the Championship in October. The Tour sincerely appreciates the generosity of Lou Perry and looks forward to a tremendous Championship in his honor.
